How to adjust an Apple Watch band

The Apple Watch is the rare case where the correct answer is to put every tool down. There are no links, no pins, no spring bars to compress, and reaching for a watch tool here does nothing but put scratches near a polished case. The skill is knowing the mechanism so well that you do not touch it with anything metal.

This brand's mechanism

Apple Watch bands attach with a proprietary slide-and-lock fitting, not a spring bar. A band release button sits on the back of the case. Press it and the band slides out sideways in a track. Sizing depends on the band: link bracelets have a small hidden button on each link that releases it by hand, sport and loop bands are sized by the band design itself, and the Solo Loop has no adjustment at all, it is sized by ordering the correct length.

Steps

1. Identify the band type: slide-on sport or loop, Apple link bracelet, or Solo Loop.
2. To remove any band, hold down the band release button on the case back and slide the band straight out of its channel.
3. For the Apple link bracelet, press the recessed release on the link and separate it by hand, no tool.
4. For a Solo Loop that does not fit, the fix is exchanging it for the right size, not adjusting it.
